The Discovery Center ~ Great Lakes is a collaborative place that connects and inspires people to protect the Great Lakes and natural resources which are precious, unique and vital to our community and our lives. 

Visitors will find many fun and informative things to see and do!

Main Campus

  • Several outdoor exhibits, including the Ship Shapes exhibit that tracks the evolution of Maritime transportation
  • Great Lakes Children's Museum with many water-themed, fun, hands-on activities
  • The Watershed Center - Grand Traverse Bay, the authoritative resource for practical approaches to protecting waters
  • Maritime Heritage Alliance wood boat building and repair shops, maritime library and office

Discovery Pier

  • Fishing from the Pier - arguably the best location on the Bay for trying your luck for trout, salmon, bass and other species
  • Tall Ship Manitou Sailing Excursions - departing three time per day, in season
  • The largest fleet of tall ships in the US Great Lakes: Manitou, Madeline, Inland Seas, Utopia, and Champion
  • Maritime Heritage Alliance's fleet of small wooden sailing and rowing craft
  • Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) Schoolship - educational programs that inspire Great Lakes curiosity, stewardship, and passion
  • ISEA Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) training program from the Schooner Utopia with an underwater obstacle course
  • Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS) competitive sail racing programs for high school students
  • Port-of-Call for visiting Great Lakes Cruise Ships, tall ships, research vessels, transient pleasure craft
  • A unique venue for events: sailing regattas, music & food festivals and performances, weddings, corporate events

  • Multi-tenant non-profit center focusing on water and natural resources
  • Co-working space with a goal to bring organizations and individuals with parallel missions together under one roof to increase programmatic cooperation, share innovative ideas, leverage the efficiencies of collaboration, and enjoy the company of people from like-minded organizations
