GFA (Gourdie-Fraser) was founded in 1948 in downtown Traverse City as the John C. Norton Company, a land surveying firm. Although our firm and service area has expanded considerably since then, we are still located in downtown Traverse City just one block from where we began. Today, we are a full-service consulting firm, offering civil engineering, structural engineering, land surveying, hydrographic surveying, contract operations for water and sewer systems, and construction phase services such as materials testing and construction observation.
Locally owned and operated, we are proud to employ nearly 50 area residents, providing quality, technical positions. We are MDOT pre-qualified in many categories, and regularly fulfill as-needed contracts for major public and private entities.
Our public work takes place at all levels, from governments to federal. We are also experts from such a long, rich history our files and knowledge of Michigan building requirements and the Traverse City regional infrastructure are extensive. This is put to work every day on projects such as Cambria Suites and the Great Wolf Lodge; minor street improvements and complete, new construction of major arterials like the Harmann-Hammond connector; and recreational spaces such as the Kid's Creek Recreation Area, the Kid's Creek Tributary, a restoration on the Munson campus, and more.
