11:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The Old Art Building in Leland will host an opening reception this Friday, August 12, for oil painter Paul Olsen. The reception is open to the public from 6 pm – 8 pm, with artist remarks beginning at 7 pm. The exhibit is named Of Wind and Waves and White Pines: An Artist’s Love of Good Harbor Bay and will remain open 11 – 4 pm daily for public viewing through Thursday, August 18. All works are original and available for sale.
Olsen is a locally renowned painter who has shown work in various galleries around Leelanau County over the last decade. He worked as a product designer and taught elementary art before turning his attention full-time to oil painting.
As an artist, the idea of place plays a significant role in Olsen’s work. This exhibition focuses on paintings created over the course of one year, showcasing natural subjects and scenes from within the Good Harbor Bay Watershed.
For Olsen, the paintings of the Canadian Group of Seven were an inspiration for this series of works. In The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson, he found meaning in the quote from artist Lawren Harris: No man can roam or inhabit the North without if affecting him...to create living works in their own right, by using forms, colors, rhythms, and moods, to make a harmonious home for the imaginative and spiritual meaning it has evoked in him.
