The Old Art Building in Leland is hosting an interactive art show called The Finer Touch of Coloring from January 14th-27th. Artist Richard Stocker invites spectators to explore the possibilities of making their own art using his fine art designs. The show is open and free for public viewing from 11 am – 3 pm daily.

Color Illustration by Richard Stocker

Stocker’s artistic expression of the coloring process will be on display, and viewers can observe the transition from the black and white design into the colored-in design. He describes his fine art designs as an intimate expression of his energy and how he lives.

The artist will be on-site most days coloring his designs with visitors. Stocker’s fine art designs will be available for purchase, and anyone interested is welcome to join a coloring session. Stocker calls the experience of coloring a treasure hunt that explores participants‘ inner colors and creativity.

Stocker is a photographer, designer, and painter whose work has appeared on the cover of Tiferet Journal, at Art Prize 2015, in the art collection of Detroit Receiving Hospital, and in the homes of private collectors. He was also a featured artist at The Detroit Institute of Arts and The University of Michigan Museum of Art for his innovative work creating community through coloring.

Long before coloring became a trend for all ages, Stocker began creating coloring books and hosting coloring events using his own ink designs. He has traveled the world teaching the healing benefits of coloring, something he discovered during his son’s difficult 5-year struggle with Leukemia. Stocker lives on the Leelanau Peninsula and devotes much time to helping families and individuals find solace and joy through color and creativity.
